About NCR Corporation
NCR Corporation is an Atlanta, Georgia based company, and their focus centers around information technology. With over 36,000 employees situated across the globe, NCR Corporation offers customers products and services related to self-service kiosks, point of sale, automated teller machines, and retail store automation.
NCR Corporation first began as the National Manufacturing Company in the late 1800s, establishing themselves in order to sell the first mechanical cash register that was invented by James Ritty in 1879. When John Henry Patterson and his brother purchased the company and its patents in 1884, the National Cash Register Company was founded. In the company’s formative years, John Henry Patterson focused his efforts on establishing a strong workforce backed by sales training and a comprehensive social welfare program.
Over the following years, NCR increased its sales as it promoted its cash registers as a business function rather than simply a product. By the early 1900s, the company had seen great sales numbers, and they quickly grew in size, workforce, and market control. During World War II, NCR assisted in the war effort as they manufactured aero-engines, code-breaking machines, and bomb sights.
After the war, NCR Corporation set their focus on computing and communications technologies as they began acquiring various related businesses. While NCR began developing computer technology to expand their offerings, they also continued to manufacture transaction related products as they produced various ATM models. In 1991, NCR was acquired by AT&T Corporation and was merged with Teradata Corporation. In 1997, however, NCR Corporation reemerged as a stand-alone company and began restructuring efforts as they sold off assets, purchased companies, and changed management. As of the present, NCR Corporation has continued the production of various products and services while they further their expansion and growth.
